DURBAN

It's an exciting city in which to play, shop, experience the nightlife and to relax. It's a city in which business and debate issues, which have far-reaching effects, not only on Africa but way beyond its borders, are discussed.

The world-class International Convention Centre has hosted an historic line-up of events including conferences of a global scale. Leisure facilities abound. Visit uShaka Marine World, Wilson's Wharf on the Victoria Embankment and the nearby BAT centre. Enjoy fine and traditional dining, entertainment and shopping in scenic surroundings. Shop till you drop in modern shopping malls. Grey Street and the Warwick Triangle boast vibrant locals shops and markets. Beachfront stalls sell traditional arts and crafts. Enjoy the excellent entertainment on offer at the city's theatres and clubs or take a township tour.

If it's peace and sheer beauty you are after, make for Durban's nature sanctuaries or parks. The Botanical Gardens are of particular interest - ask about their 'Music by the Lake' evenings - wonderful music played by KZN's Philharmonic Orchestra in wonder surrounds.

UPPER HIGHWAY

The Upper Highway area consists of Kloof, Hillcrest, Everton, Gillitts, Hillcrest, Winston Park, Waterfall and Assagay. A short drive from Durban you will find the Valley of a Thousand Hills and this stunning part of KwaZulu Natal offers a plethora of flora and fauna, trails, wildlife, birdlife, authentic Zulu culture, picturesque guest houses and stylish old hotels.

Kloof, Everton and Gillitts are a mere 30km from the Durban CBD and form the first “elevated” suburbs just beyond Durban’s humidity belt. These Upper Highway suburbs are located within the sub-tropical zone at around 550 meters above sea level, offering one of the healthiest climates in the world.

Kloof enjoys the reputation of being one of the most desirable residential property areas in South Africa and its natural environment has been enhanced by its beautiful homes and luxurious lifestyle estates. Despite  the large amount of property development that has taken place in the Upper Highway area, Kloof has retained it’s village quality. The town of Kloof surrounds the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, which is situated only a few kilometres from the centre of Kloof

Hillcrest is picturesque (it’s actually one of the oldest villages in the area) and is one of the fastest developing areas in the Upper Highway. One of Hillcrest’s main attractions is “The Heritage Market”, a Victorian style shopping complex with gazeboes, lovely walkways, beautiful rose gardens, restaurants and many quaint shops

SOUTH COAST

The South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, is one of the most popular travel and holiday destinations in South Africa. The area stretches from the Umkomaas River at Scottburgh, south to the Umtamvuna River at Port Edward on the border of the Eastern Cape. This sub-tropical, malaria free area, is full of holiday towns offering a host of accommodation, entertainment and eco-adventure. Well known holiday spots include Shelly Beach, Margate, Uvongo, St Michaels, Ramsgate and Southbroom.

Water activities are a major attraction for: surfing, swimming, fishing, snorkeling, whale watching and the internationally renowned annual sardine run. The renowned Protea Banks dive site with its vast shoals and sharks bring great delight to divers. The fishing in Margate and Shelly Beach is superb, and rocks off the shore abound with mussels though a license is required to remove them. The South Coast coastline comes to life with an energetic buzz of fishermen and locals when the annual Sardine Run takes place. Deemed to be the greatest shoal on earth, these tiny silver fish bring with them larger game fish, dolphins and a variety of birdlife seeking an easy meal.

Four of the 19 South African beaches which have been awarded international Blue Flag status for 2008/09 for excelling in safety, cleanliness, provision of amenities and maintenance of environmental standards,  are on the South Coast and include Hibberdene Beach, Margate Beach, Marina/San Lameer Beach and Ramsgate Beach.

Golfers have a wide selection of premier SA courses available including the Wild Coast Sun, San Lameer, Selbourne, Margate, Southbroom and Port Shepstone.

For the young and young at heart, Margate is the nightlife centre for on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, and when the clubs close, the beach parties often start!.

This is the heart of the Hibiscus Coast and Country and the region's beauty is obvious from the moment you take the N2 south of Durban and into a sub-tropical paradise of golden beaches, coastal forests and endless, sunny days.

Margate is a seaside resort town in the south of the KwaZulu-Natal coast, just about 20 kilometres southwest of Port Shepstone. The river which flows into the sea at Margate is called "Nkhongweni" (place of entreaty) because the original inhabitants were reputed to be so mean that travellers had to beg for hospitality. In 1908, Henry Richardson, an English surveyor laid out the town and named it Margate after another seaside resort on the northern coast of the county of Kent, in the United Kingdom.

Shelly Beach is probably best known for the Shelly Beach shopping mall offers plenty of secure parking and a wide variety of shops under one roof. Shelly Beach also has the busiest small craft harbour on the South Coast. Shelly Beach is also a primary launching site for deep-sea fishing, as well as dolphin and whale spotting ventures.

Uvongo is a bustling holiday town with a lot to offer the visitor. From St Michaels beach to Lucien Point you will find a hotel, modern flats and holiday homes that are occupied virtually all year round. The Uvongo beach is beautiful and the waterfall is a truly grand sight - with canoes on the lagoon and waves crashing into the tidal pool. St Michaels beach is a surfers dream. There are Chinese, Italian and seafood restuarants, pizza take-aways, busy shops and supermarkets in Uvongo village, and in Manaba.

Ramsgate has a unique village atmosphere and numerous holiday cottages nestling amongst the indigenous coastal bush. The beaches, lagoons and glorious walks along the sandy shore are enjoyed by those seeker a quieter place.

A quiet but bustling self contained Village, Southbroom is buried in a tropical paradise offering a relaxed lifestyle for residents and holidaymakers of all ages. The beautiful Southbroom Bay which is protected by shark nets, is ideal for surfers whilst sun worshippers can enjoy the scenic views from the grassy terraces.

NORTH COAST/DOLPHIN COAST

The Zulu Kingdom's north coast, also known as the Dolphin Coast, stretches from Zimbali to the mighty Tugela River. This is the playground of the bottlenose dolphins, which frolic in the waters close to shore and are visible all year round. It offers luxury, beauty, sport and history.

It is a place to indulge the senses - either in good restaurants offering fine dining, or partying in nightclubs. Tee off on the excellent golf courses, or for the sheer thrill of it - take to the air in a microlight and see this magnificent coastline as the seagulls see it.

Stroll or take a horse-ride along the shoreline at low tide and search for sea life. Climb rocky outcrops and enjoy a spot of angling.

The great Shaka Zulu is buried at Kwa-Dukuza, and Nobel laureate, Albert Luthuli, lies buried nearby. Walk a 'muti' (African medicine) trail through the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve or visit historic battle sites such as the Ultimatum Tree, Ndondakusuka or Fort Pearson. Zulu hospitality is warm and the people friendly. They are proud to show you their heritage.

The North Coast is also home to a large Indian community. Look out for their temples, sample their spicy foodstuffs or shop for fresh produce at any of the numerous markets.

The north coast is a place to relax, kick back, and savour your surrounds. Enjoy.

PIETERMARITZBURG/MIDLANDS

Is home to quaint antique shops, markets, restaurants, art galleries and museums, and more recently a casino. This is the town in which the annual Dusi Canoe Marathon starts, and is the beginning or ending point of the world- renowned annual Comrades Marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, which attracts about 15 000 participants.

The Midlands Meander, the first route of its kind in the country, opened up the wonders and beauty of the interior of KwaZulu-Natal over a decade ago. It has grown into an eclectic and fascinating mix of arts and crafts, world-class restaurants and homely comforts, with a wide range of sporting environmental and historical pursuits.

The magnificent Howick Falls located in this area provide picnic facilities. Trout and bass fishing are plentiful and for the more adventurous there is paragliding off Bulwer Mountain or taking a slide across the canopy of Karkloof's indigenous forests.

UKHAHLAMBA/DRAKENSBERG

The Zulu people named it 'Ukhahlamba' or the 'Barrier of Spears' and the Dutch Voortrekkers 'The Dragon Mountain'. The Drakensberg Mountains, with their awe-inspiring basalt cliffs, snowcapped in winter, tower over riverine bush, lush yellowwood forests and cascading waterfalls, form a massive barrier separating KwaZulu-Natal from the Kingdom of Lesotho. The only road access is via Sani Pass, which at the top, boasts the highest pub on Africa, 3 000 metres above sea level.

Combining sheer natural beauty with a wealth of biological diversity, this 243 000 hectare mountainous region known the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park has been preserved and venerated for eons since the San people or bushmen roamed these slopes. Tens of thousands of paintings depicting their daily life can be found on the rock faces, and in December 2000, the park received international recognition and was declared KwaZulu-Natal's second World Heritage Site.

A more rugged trail extends northwards from Willard to Shaka's Rock which takes you through a hole in a cliff - best attempted at low tide.
